Synonyms and Regional Names:- Sans. Lehsum; Hi. Lasun; Guj. Lasan
Biological Source:- Ripe bulbs of Allium sativum L. Belonging to family Liliaceae containing not less than 0.1 % of allicin.
Geographical source :- Cultivated in India, Russia,U.S.A.,Italy and other south eastern European countries.
Characters:- The drug of the main ovate bulb and 5-15 secondary bulbs, both being surrounded by common white dry scaly leaves.
conctituents:- The bulbs contain water soluble sulphur compound 'allin' whch as such is an odourless compound but during crushing, heating or distillation an enzyme allin-lyase present in garlic gets activated and converts allin into 'allicin' which is highly unstable and in thr pressence of water and oxygen gets decomposed into polysulphides whch are responsible for the unpleasant smell.
